About the Role
MorphLabs is developing a non-invasive brain interface to enable intuitive prosthetic control for upper-limb amputees by decoding movement intent from EEG in real-time. This is a five-month, full-time Design Intern position focused on the physical design of the headset system, working directly with the founding team and hardware engineers. The intern will own a well-scoped project from concept to tested prototype.
Key Responsibilities
- Form and Identity: Proportions, materials, color, and finish of the headset.
- Fit and Comfort: Ensuring the headset fits a wide range of head shapes and sizes comfortably for a full day.
- Electrode Retention Mechanisms: Designing mechanisms to maintain steady electrode contact with the scalp, measured against signal quality.
- Miniaturization and Enclosures: Collaborating with electrical engineers on enclosures.
- Prosthetic Integration: Designing mounts, housings, and interfaces for prosthetic and robotic hands.
- Prototyping and Testing: Moving from sketch to CAD to physical parts, followed by testing on real people.
- Design for Manufacture and Documentation.
- Product and Interface Design: Contributing to software interfaces for system setup, calibration, and control.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Proficiency in taking designs from sketch to CAD to physical prototype, multiple times.
- Experience with design work that had to fit the human body (e.g., wearables, medical devices, protective or sports gear).
- Strong mechanical sense, including understanding of tolerances, materials, mechanisms, and assembly.
- Experience with testing on real people and fast iteration.
- Experience with Product and interface design for setup, calibration, and control screens.
Qualifications
- A portfolio showcasing physical products you designed and built yourself.
- Familiarity with wearables, medical devices, or consumer hardware is a plus.
- Experience with DFM (injection molding, machining, sheet metal) is a plus.
- Experience with packaging electronics is a plus.
- Experience with prosthetics/orthotics is a plus.
- Experience with soft goods and textiles is a plus.
