About the Role
SpaceX is developing technologies for humanity to explore the stars, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. Starlink provides fast, reliable internet by designing, building, launching, and operating the world's largest constellation of satellites. Starmind is a new constellation delivering AI compute capability from space. The Bastrop site is SpaceX's fastest growing site, responsible for terrestrial hardware and next-generation satellite technology.
Several mechanical teams at the Bastrop site are hiring new graduate engineers. These teams focus on:
- Product Design: Owning Starlink consumer hardware from concept to high-volume production for enterprise, commercial, residential, and roam sectors.
- Gateway Design: Owning Starlink ground station hardware from concept to global deployment and operation.
- Satellite Design: Owning Starmind satellite hardware from concept to production and orbital deployment.
- Process: Developing and implementing advanced manufacturing processes for PCB fabrication, silicon packaging, solar-cell processing, and more.
- Manufacturing & Tooling: Designing production lines and tools for high-volume daily unit production and continuous process improvement.
- Reliability: Leading failure analysis and root cause efforts to ensure hardware reliability.
- Controls: Leading projects in machine design, robotics, motion systems, and factory health monitoring for innovative, high-rate factories.
- Facilities: Improving site-wide mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, building structures, and construction systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Own Starlink/Starmind hardware from conceptual design through high-volume production.
- Develop design criteria, collaborate on requirements, and drive system-level optimization.
- Design and develop production lines, including robot end effector design, process development, control system design, and automation programming.
- Refine production systems for high-rate, high-yield, and reliable processes.
- Identify trends and opportunities for optimizing product output, quality enhancements, and cost of manufacturability.
- Troubleshoot mechanical system problems, formulate maintenance protocols, service schedules, and coordinate material procurement for machinery upkeep.
- Challenge assumptions and work to find simple solutions to complex problems.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Mechanical/electromechanical design, analysis, testing, and/or manufacturing experience (internships/co-ops and club projects are applicable).
- Experience with CAD and/or finite element analysis (FEA) software packages.
- Experience with Six Sigma and basic failure analysis tools and methods (X-ray, cross-section, polishing).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes and how to design for manufacturability.
- Exposure to production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (motion systems, dispense systems, temperature controllers, laser distance sensors, injection molders, die casters, etc.).
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing needs and requirements.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another STEM discipline.
- Graduating in the class of 2026 or 2027.
- Solid understanding and application of GD&T, mechanical engineering fundamentals, structural analysis, and failure modes of complex mechanical systems.
Additional Information
- U.S. Citizen or national, U.S. lawful, permanent resident (green card holder), Refugee, or Asylee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.
