About the Role

This internship is for summer 2027 and will be located in SeaTac, WA. It is a full-time, 12-week program. The Software Delivery Platform (SDP) is Alaska Airlines' enterprise Kubernetes platform, used by over 20 engineering teams to run nearly 400 production services. The SDP team operates 40+ Kubernetes clusters and 450+ nodes. As an SDP intern, you will join the team during its move to a second-generation platform and work on real platform code.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in Agile ceremonies (Scrum stand-ups, backlog grooming) and track work in Azure DevOps (ADO).
  • Test, upgrade, and promote platform add-ons (e.g., Cilium, Envoy Gateway, cert-manager, Dynatrace) using GitOps with Argo CD.
  • Contribute to Terraform for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) infrastructure.
  • Automate repetitive operational tasks in line with security requirements.
  • Fix bugs and add tests in Go-based Kubernetes operators and platform tooling, with senior engineer code review.
  • Support application teams migrating from the first-generation platform to Gen2.
  • Assist with monitoring, troubleshooting, and reporting issues across platform environments.
  • Write and improve runbooks and documentation.
  • Gain exposure to on-premises platform modernization (e.g., Cluster API, VMware vSphere, hardened Ubuntu images) by shadowing engineers.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Current undergraduate student in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of the Linux command line and Git.
  • Basic programming or scripting experience (e.g., Go, Python, Bash, or PowerShell).
  • Effective communication skills (verbal, written, and listening).
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program with at least one semester or quarter remaining after the internship.
  • Achieved a junior or higher academic standing at the time of application.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Coursework or project experience with Go.
  • Exposure to containers and Kubernetes (e.g., Docker, kind, minikube) through coursework or personal projects.
  • Familiarity with a hosted cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or Google) or infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform).
  • Familiarity with Git-based workflows, CI/CD, and YAML-based configuration.
  • Experience sharing knowledge with others (presentations, classes, team demos).

Total Rewards

  • Free stand-by travel privileges on Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines & Horizon Air.
  • Travel benefits begin on day one.
  • Up to six employee choice travel credits.
