About Urban Sky
Urban Sky is a venture-backed aerospace startup dedicated to pioneering routine, easy access to the stratosphere. We design, build, operate, and sell stratospheric balloon systems for applications including real-time wildfire monitoring and urban mapping. Our technology is also utilized by government customers such as the Department of War (DoW) and NASA. Urban Sky operates flight vehicles to the stratosphere on a weekly basis. Our team comprises engineers, makers, developers, and doers who value passion, utility, and a supportive team environment. We foster a culture grounded in candor, inclusion, respect, and empowerment, aiming to build the next chapter of stratospheric history in Denver and Texas. We are seeking self-starting, open-minded, and hard-working team members.
About The Role
This is a junior software engineering position within Urban Sky's IT team. The role involves significant IT operations work, including supporting employees, managing the ticket queue, handling onboarding and offboarding, administering Microsoft 365, imaging devices, and implementing CMMC 2.0 and NIST 800-171 controls. Additionally, you will develop automations, scripts, dashboards, and internal tools to enable a small IT team to support an aerospace company launching to the stratosphere daily. As you automate, more time will be available for engineering tasks. IT interacts with all company teams, providing broad exposure to the organization within six months. This role is expected to evolve with your growth, with an initial one to three years focused on skill development and company understanding. Opportunities exist to transition into internal tools and automation, or to join other engineering teams like flight software, mission control, data pipelines, or embedded firmware.
Day One Responsibilities
- Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 IT support for employees, troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues across Windows and macOS fleets.
- Manage the daily ticket queue.
- Execute employee onboarding and offboarding processes, including device setup, account provisioning, access management, and device recovery.
- Administer Microsoft 365, including identity, licensing, mailboxes, SharePoint, and Teams.
- Track, tag, and reconcile IT assets, including spares.
- Learn compliance frameworks (CMMC 2.0, NIST 800-171) and contribute to control implementation and evidence collection.
- Develop automations, scripts, and internal tools to scale the IT team, including onboarding workflows, access provisioning, M365 scripting, and asset tracking.
- Document procedures, fixes, and known issues.
Responsibilities You Will Develop Into
- Take increasing ownership of internal web apps and automations for employee onboarding, access management, and compliance evidence collection.
- Build and extend dashboards and reporting for business visibility into IT, access, and compliance status.
- Script CMMC 2.0 and NIST 800-171 evidence collection to facilitate company growth without increased headcount.
- Assist in securing Urban Sky's production AI agent deployments.
- Participate in the broader Software Engineering organization's cross-team tooling and APIs.
- Transition into a specialized engineering seat within another team as interests align.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Scripting experience in any language (PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar).
- Comfort writing against APIs.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software, and connectivity problems systematically and communicate solutions.
- Fundamentals in operating systems, networking, and identity.
- Comfort in both Windows and macOS environments.
- Hands-on, self-directing approach, capable of owning problems from report to resolution independently.
- Clear written communication for code, documentation, runbooks, and compliance artifacts.
- Comfortable with a role that begins with significant IT operations, with engineering work expanding over time.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrated engineering ability.
- 0 to 2 years of professional experience.
- Must be a US Citizen or equivalent work authorization (Permanent Resident or otherwise eligible to access controlled US Government information).
- Must be located near Denver, CO or willing to relocate for on-site work.
Nice-to-Haves / Preferred Skills
- Internship, co-op, or project experience in software engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, IT, or security.
- Exposure to Microsoft 365 administration or scripting against the Graph API.
- Working fluency in a modern language and framework (TypeScript / Node / React, Python, Go, or similar).
- Familiarity with security frameworks such as CMMC 2.0, NIST 800-171, SOC 2, or ISO 27001.
- Interest in AI tools, agentic workflows, and safe deployment engineering practices.
- Security-related certifications (Security+, Network+, or equivalent).
- Prior experience in a startup, aerospace, defense, or fast-paced learning environments.
