About the Role

Davidson is hiring a MBSE Software Systems Engineer (Entry) in Colorado Springs, CO. This role involves working with the Air Force to design, develop, and deploy software for the United States' next-generation Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyzes customer requirements, concept of operations (CONOPS) documents, and high-level system architectures to develop, decompose, allocate, and maintain system requirements specifications using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices.
  • Develops and maintains SysML-based system models representing system requirements, structure, behavior, interfaces, allocations, constraints, and verification relationships.
  • Analyzes system requirements and leads systems engineering design and development activities using model-based methods to establish and maintain traceability from mission needs through requirements, architecture, design, implementation, and verification.
  • Guides users and stakeholders in formulating and refining requirements, advises on alternative approaches, and conducts feasibility and trade studies using analytical and model-based techniques.
  • Provides technical leadership for the integration of requirements, system architecture, design, interfaces, technology, and verification activities within the MBSE environment.
  • Develops and maintains system architecture models, including functional, logical, physical, behavioral, and interface views, consistent with established system engineering processes and modeling standards.
  • Defines and manages system interfaces and interface relationships, including software-to-software and software-to-hardware interfaces, and supports development and maintenance of Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Establishes and maintains requirements-to-architecture, architecture-to-design, and requirements-to-verification traceability within engineering models and supporting tools.
  • Incorporates new plans, designs, technologies, and system capabilities into ongoing operations while maintaining model consistency and configuration integrity.
  • Develops technical documentation, including system architecture, system design, requirements, interface, trade study, and verification documentation, leveraging MBSE artifacts and model-derived views.
  • Guides system development and implementation planning through assessment or preparation of Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMPs), system integration plans, and system verification and test plans.
  • Collaborates with Systems Architects, Software Architects, Product Owners, software engineers, hardware engineers, and other stakeholders to resolve systems engineering technical considerations, issues, risks, and conflicts.
  • Supports model-based integration and verification activities, ensuring system requirements and architectural elements are appropriately linked to verification methods and test objectives.
  • Applies systems engineering and MBSE best practices across the system lifecycle, supporting consistency, reuse, configuration management, and technical baseline integrity.
  • Holds technical accountability for the integrity, quality, traceability, and successful execution of systems engineering and MBSE deliverables.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Foundational knowledge of the DoD systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements analysis, decomposition and allocation, system architecture, interface definition, integration, and verification and validation, gained through academic coursework, internships, research, or engineering projects.
  • Foundational knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies and Systems Modeling Language (SysML), with the ability to develop, interpret, and maintain basic system models.
  • Understanding of fundamental MBSE concepts, including model-based requirements management, system structure, behavior, interfaces, allocations, traceability, and verification relationships.
  • Exposure to MBSE and systems engineering tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, IBM DOORS/DOORS Next, or similar requirements and modeling environments.
  • Foundational understanding of software and systems architecture, including software-to-software and software-to-hardware interfaces and Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Ability to translate high-level mission and system-level requirements into system functions, functional and logical architectures, software requirements, functional components, interfaces, and user stories.
  • Foundational understanding of software development lifecycles utilizing Agile and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) methodologies.
  • Understanding of requirements traceability and the relationship between requirements, architecture, design, implementation, integration, and verification/validation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with systems, software, and hardware engineering teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline (Aerospace, Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science) or related discipline.
  • Four (4) years of additional systems engineering experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.
  • Active DoD Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing or contributing to SysML models for system requirements, architecture, behavior, interfaces, allocations, or verification.
  • Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler or MagicDraw, including development of system architecture diagrams, activity/behavior models, requirement diagrams, block definition/internal block diagrams, parametric models, or traceability relationships.
  • Familiarity with SysML v1.x and/or SysML v2 concepts or demonstrated interest in evolving MBSE practices.
  • Familiarity with model governance, configuration management, model validation, reusable model elements, and digital-thread concepts.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming concepts and the ability to read or understand code in languages such as C++, Java, or Python.
  • Exposure to safety-critical or mission-critical software development concepts and applicable engineering standards.
  • Exposure to DoD systems, aerospace, defense, or other complex system-of-systems engineering environments through internships, academic projects, research, or prior work experience.
  • Familiarity with software cybersecurity concepts, including Risk Management Framework (RMF) and Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) principles.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps concepts, automated testing, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) environments.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, or similar engineering collaboration and project management tools.
  • Experience integrating requirements-management tools with MBSE/modeling environments or supporting requirements-to-model traceability.
  • Internship, co-op, capstone, research, or project experience in systems engineering, MBSE, software engineering, aerospace/defense, or a related technical field.
  • Academic or project experience applying MBSE/SysML to a complex system, system-of-systems, or mission-level problem.
