About the Role
SipDisk is seeking a part-time Product Design Engineer (~20 hours/week, January–June 2027) to design and develop a three-test version of their device. The goal is to have a tested, production-intent prototype ready for manufacturing by the end of June. This role involves in-person work at the Humanmade Hardware Accelerator in San Francisco.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and iterate on small, tight-tolerance components in SolidWorks, building from a single-test pilot design to a three-test version.
- Rapidly prototype parts on a Formlabs Form 4 SLA printer, then test and refine them.
- Incorporate feedback from a spring pilot into the design.
- Lead DFM/DFA and tolerance reviews to get the design production-ready.
- Validate assembly and work with the manufacturing partner and suppliers on specs, materials, and feasibility.
- Deliver a design release package: CAD files, drawings, a bill of materials, and cost targets.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Strong CAD skills; SolidWorks strongly preferred.
- Hands-on resin/SLA 3D printing experience.
- Experience designing and prototyping small physical products.
- Experience with design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) and tolerance analysis.
- Familiarity with creating engineering drawings.
- Ability to reliably commit ~20 hours/week from January through June.
- Access to a dedicated Formlabs Form 4 SLA printer.
Qualifications
- Comfortable communicating with external partners and suppliers.
- Creative, scrappy problem-solver who enjoys a fast-paced environment where designs and priorities change often.
- Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, product design, or a related field preferred; grad students and recent grads welcome.
- Bonus: experience with consumer hardware, diagnostics, or an interest in personal safety or public health.
