About the Role
Serve as a vital member of the Oceaneering Aerospace and Defense Technologies (ADTECH) engineering team, focusing on the development and implementation of complex power and control systems for unique underwater robotic and electromechanical systems. This role involves diverse activities and the opportunity to work on unique, compelling projects. Engineers are encouraged to participate in building and testing their creations.
Key Responsibilities
- Electrical design and analysis of components and subsystems for underwater robotic and electromechanical systems.
- Generate proper designs based on subsystem requirements and complete tasks with latitude for decisions under limited supervision, working individually and in a team.
- Exercise excellent technical judgment, creativity, and initiative with attention to detail, maintaining a system perspective.
- Prepare for and participate in regular design reviews.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineers, and other disciplines to solve problems and architect working systems.
- Be responsible and accountable for results, working with considerable autonomy while knowing when to ask for assistance.
- Desire to stretch and expand talents, expertise, competency, and responsibilities.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Bachelor of Science or advanced degree from an accredited university in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or related field/curriculum with an Electrical concentration).
- Entry-level knowledge and desire to gain practical technical experience in the electrical engineering process, including concept, analysis, simulation, design, drawing, assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and testing of complex electrical, electromechanical, and automated/robotic and underwater vehicle systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a United States Government Department of Defense Security Clearance.
- Must be a US citizen.
- Select and integrate Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) equipment, including designing necessary interfaces.
- Select and size electrical and electronic components and wiring devices (e.g., signal conditioning, power supplies, control devices, switching devices, SSRs, safety devices, terminal blocks, connectors, DIN rail, wiring, cabling, marshalling, dressing).
- Select and interface components of industrial quality embedded microprocessor, single-board computer (SBC) based control systems, including defining signals, sensors, actuators, and selecting appropriate I/O. Custom electrical designs may be required.
- Design, interface, translate, and integrate various data communications signaling (e.g., Ethernet, USB, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, SPI, I2C, CAN), including associated media and protocols.
- DC power systems design.
- Calculate and estimate system power and energy requirements.
- Wiring, cabling, and grounding design for minimizing electrical noise and EMI.
- Good electrical drawing/drafting skills: create and read schematics, wiring diagrams, cable drawings, system cabling and block diagrams.
- Experience with standard electronic test equipment (e.g., DMM/multimeters, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, communications analyzers, CTDR, OTDR, optical power meters).
- Experience with advanced CAD, Simulation, and Analysis software packages such as Altium Designer, SPICE, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, MathCAD, MATLAB.
- Proficiency with common office productivity software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability and flexibility to travel on occasion (typically pre-planned for up to one to two weeks at a time), within or outside the US, or offshore.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge/experience in the marine industry (surface or underwater), including ROVs, AUVs, and related robotic and electromechanical systems; also sonar systems.
- Knowledge of applicable industry professional, technical, and military standards (IEEE, ANSI, IEC, ISO, NEMA, NEC, MIL).
- Good practical technician skills (assembly, wiring, soldering, cabling).
- Knowledge/experience with fiber-optics.
- Knowledge/experience with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design.
- Knowledge/experience with brushless motor drives, robotics, and automation.
- Knowledge/experience designing, analyzing, and tuning closed-loop feedback control systems.
- Knowledge/experience with low-medium voltage, single- and 3-phase power systems (120, 240, 480, 3000+ VAC).
- Knowledge/experience applying machine safety systems and standards.
- Knowledge/experience with programming languages and/or script writing (software, firmware).
