AI & Internal Tools Software Engineer
Inversion
About the Role
As an AI & Internal Tools Software Engineering Intern at Inversion, you will help build the software products that enable our engineering and business teams to move faster, work smarter, and solve complex problems. You will develop internal applications, automation platforms, and AI-enabled tools that directly improve how we design, manufacture, and operate next-generation spacecraft. You will join our Internal Software Tools team and take ownership of a major software project, either building a new product from the ground up or developing a substantial feature in an existing application. You will work directly with engineers and other stakeholders to identify problems, develop solutions, and deliver software that people across the company use every day. This is an opportunity to work across the full software stack, from frontend applications and backend services to APIs, data infrastructure, and modern AI/LLM integrations. We're looking for builders who enjoy turning ideas into real products and are excited about exploring how software and AI can transform the aerospace industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Own a major software engineering project from initial concept and requirements gathering through design, implementation, testing, and production deployment.
- Design and build full-stack applications, including intuitive user interfaces, backend services, APIs, and databases.
- Develop AI-enabled tools and intelligent automation systems that streamline engineering and business workflows.
- Integrate large language models (LLMs), AI agents, and other emerging technologies into practical software applications where appropriate.
- Collaborate directly with engineers, operations teams, and other stakeholders to understand their workflows and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Gather feedback from real users, iterate on solutions, and deliver polished, production-quality tools.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated software development experience through personal projects, open-source contributions, research, engineering teams, or previous internships.
- Experience building software applications using one or more languages such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Go, or Rust.
- Familiarity with frontend or backend application development, including web frameworks, APIs, or databases.
- Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including debugging, testing, data structures, and application design.
- Demonstrated ability to independently build software projects and learn new technologies.
- Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and a willingness to tackle loosely defined technical challenges.
- Ability to collaborate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders and communicate ideas effectively.
- Familiarity with building and deploying applications used by real users.
- Familiarity with databases, REST APIs, and integrations between software systems.
- Experience building internal tools, dashboards, workflow automation, or developer productivity tools.
- Interest in applying AI and modern software technologies to complex engineering and business problems.
- Experience with Docker, Linux, CI/CD pipelines, or modern application deployment workflows.
Desired Qualifications (Additional Experience)
- Experience developing full-stack web applications using technologies such as React, TypeScript, Python, Node.js, or similar frameworks.
- Experience integrating large language models (LLMs) into applications using APIs or open-source frameworks.
- Familiarity with AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool calling, or agent orchestration frameworks.
This position requires in-office presence at our Playa Vista, CA headquarters for the duration of the internship.
The California annual base hourly rate for this role is currently $38-$41.
