About the Role
Roku is building agentic capability into its platform powering over 100 million streaming households. This is a systems engineering role focused on making agents work on top of high-load systems. The work involves telemetry, distributed services, and physical devices.
About the Team
Join the Roku OS Platform UI team, responsible for Roku's home screen, Roku Channel, and other content discovery experiences that ship to hundreds of millions of devices worldwide. Engineers on this team own features end-to-end, from the OS platform layer through Application and UI to cloud integration, collaborating with product, design, and cross-functional engineering partners.
What You Will Work On
- Multi-step agents that perform production tasks, including detecting regressions, bisecting commits, proposing fixes, and generating/reviewing code.
- Internal tooling designed for adoption by colleagues to improve team efficiency.
- Real-time telemetry and event processing at streaming scale, considering CPU and memory constraints of home devices.
- Agent problems involving hardware, physical feedback, device fleets, and signals that cannot be simulated on a laptop.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Systems engineering fundamentals.
- Experience with real-time data, telemetry, distributed systems, platforms, or device work.
- Experience building and shipping something agentic that others use (work or personal project, multi-step).
- A clear approach to accountability for code not directly written, such as design-first, review discipline, or personal gates.
- An informed perspective on current limitations of agents and their reasons.
- Existing right to work in the US (visa sponsorship is not available).
Qualifications
- Up to 3-4 years of professional engineering experience since completing studies.
- Systems or infrastructure fundamentals are non-negotiable.
- Ability to discuss a built and shipped agentic project in detail, including what it does and what broke.
- Ability to articulate your personal system for code accountability.
- A well-reasoned view on where agents are not good enough yet.
Interview Process
- Working fluently with AI tools is an explicit expectation and will be assessed directly.
- The interview process includes a hands-on engineering exercise on an unfamiliar codebase using familiar tools.
Project Ahsoka
This role is part of Project Ahsoka, an early career program for engineers building agentic systems. Participants are paired with a mentor, join a squad with other Ahsoka engineers, and contribute as an AI hiring sponsor.
Location & Work Model
- San Jose, California
- Roku engineering works in the office Monday to Thursday, with a flexible Friday. The role is not remote.
Benefits
Roku offers a diverse range of benefits including global access to mental health and financial wellness support. Local benefits may include healthcare (medical, dental, vision), life, accident, disability, commuter, and retirement options (401(k)/pension). Time off is supported in accordance with local policies. Note: Not all benefits are available in all locations or for every role.
