About the Role

Protagonist is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to join our collaborative engineering team. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to contribute directly to the development of our Narrative Analytics® platform. You will write real code for a real product, working across backend development, user-facing applications, data pipelines, and AI-powered features. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, data scientists, and analysts, gaining exposure to modern development tools and technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build API endpoints in Python (Django REST Framework) and the React/TypeScript components that use them.
  • Write steps in our data pipelines (Metaflow) to pull in documents, enrich them with LLMs, and index them in OpenSearch.
  • Assist in building and evaluating LLM features, including prompt templates, structured outputs, and scorecards.
  • Gain experience with AWS services such as S3, Bedrock, and EKS.
  • Write tests, upgrade dependencies, fix issues, and help track down production bugs.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and analysts to understand platform usage and engineering contributions to analytical workflows.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. and meet applicable U.S. Government contract eligibility requirements.
  • Available to work a minimum of 20 hours/week.
  • Must be able to work in-office in Washington D.C. 1-2 days per week.
  • Comfortable in Python.
  • Experience using Git.
  • Some exposure to web development (any framework), SQL, or JavaScript.
  • Curiosity in NLP, machine learning, or large language models.

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience with a class project or side project in Django, React, or TypeScript.
  • Experience with Pandas or other data work in Python.
  • Experience calling an LLM API and building something with it.
  • Experience using AI coding tools and the ability to evaluate their output.
  • Experience with Docker or any cloud provider.
