About the Role

Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession.

As an intern on the Manufacturing Software team, you'll be a core contributor, helping to manufacture high-quality drones, docks, and accessories at scale. The processes and tools you build will have a significant impact on the company's scale and success. This team is highly cross-functional, sitting at the intersection of backend (Python + Flask), embedded software (C++/C), frontend (React + Typescript), and electrical engineering (Robotics and Hardware Fixtures).

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a Hardware-in-the-Loop system for continuous testing of hardware and software components.
  • Design a deployment system for sending code to physical machines globally, with redundant safety systems.
  • Build a visual configuration tool for documenting and changing mass production processes.
  • Develop our robot calibration process to distinguish between hardware and software failures and suggest rework steps.
  • Create a dashboard to visualize the factory state for faster debugging.
  • Develop an automated test fixture to assess sensors and actuators, minimizing operator interaction.
  • Develop an AI-powered triage system to inspect drone hardware and suggest parts needing repair, combining LLM agents with the manufacturing API.

Requirements & Tech Stack

  • Strong coding fundamentals.
  • Comfortable with Python.
  • Patient troubleshooter, comfortable asking for and giving help.
  • Passion for hardware-software systems.
  • Interest in How It's Made or Factorio.

Tech Stack:

  • Python + Flask backend + on-machine, Protobufs for IPC and RPC.
  • React + Typescript frontend.
  • On-premises containerized Linux client machines and servers, AWS backend cloud.
  • Hardware-in-the-Loop validation systems.
  • In-house framework for manufacturing and testing operations.

Qualifications

  • You enjoy building products and working on systems involving both hardware and software.
  • You are very comfortable with Python and have strong coding fundamentals.
  • You are a patient troubleshooter, comfortable asking for help when needed and giving help whenever possible.
  • You get excited by "How It's Made" or Factorio and want to work on the machine that builds the machines.
