About the Role
Tetra Tech is seeking a Mechanical Engineer, EIT to support the design and delivery of mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and water/wastewater facilities. This role offers an opportunity for an early-career mechanical engineer to strengthen technical expertise, gain experience on diverse infrastructure projects, and progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical engineering design and calculations for HVAC, ventilation, hydronic, and plumbing systems under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers.
- Prepare HVAC heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, equipment sizing, and basic energy analyses in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
- Assist in the design and layout of mechanical systems, including air distribution, piping, ductwork, pumps, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Develop and coordinate engineering drawings, details, schedules, and construction documents using AutoCAD, Revit, and other applicable design software.
- Support the preparation of technical specifications, engineering reports, design narratives, and equipment schedules using tools such as RIB SpecLink.
- Evaluate mechanical equipment and system requirements, including equipment selection, performance criteria, and coordination with other engineering disciplines.
- Collaborate with structural, electrical, civil, and process engineers to ensure mechanical systems are integrated into overall project designs.
- Assist with construction administration activities, including reviewing shop drawings and equipment submittals, preparing responses to contractor RFIs, and supporting punch list development.
- Participate in site visits, field investigations, and construction observations to evaluate existing conditions, verify design requirements, and support project execution.
- Apply applicable building codes, mechanical codes, ASHRAE standards, and engineering design guidelines.
- Work with senior engineers and project managers to deliver accurate, coordinated engineering documents while meeting project schedules and quality standards.
- Continue developing technical expertise and professional engineering competencies through hands-on project experience, mentorship, and collaboration with experienced engineering professionals.
Requirements & Tech Stack
- Foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mechanical system design.
- Understanding of HVAC and plumbing system design principles, including equipment sizing, load calculations, and piping and ductwork layouts.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar engineering design software.
- Basic understanding of applicable mechanical codes, building codes, and industry standards, including ASHRAE.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams while managing assigned technical tasks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and possession of, or eligibility to obtain, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
- Preferred: 0–3 years of mechanical engineering design experience, including relevant internships or co-op assignments.
- Preferred: Experience or exposure to mechanical design for commercial, industrial, municipal, or water/wastewater facilities.
- Preferred: Familiarity with HVAC load calculation software, energy modeling tools, or mechanical design applications.
- Preferred: Exposure to engineering consulting, construction document preparation, and construction administration.
- Preferred: Interest in advancing toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
Work Environment / Physical Demands
- Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment.
- Periodic visits to construction sites, industrial facilities, and municipal infrastructure locations may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, mechanical equipment, uneven surfaces, and active construction activities.
- Adherence to applicable safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, and protective footwear, may be required.
- Travel to project sites, client meetings, and other offices may be required (approximately 15% or more).
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Ability to move throughout an office environment to access equipment, files, and collaborate with colleagues.
- Ability to visit active construction sites, which may involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs or ladders, and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of drawings, field equipment, or related materials as needed.
- Ability to observe mechanical systems, equipment installations, and construction activities during field visits.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and in writing.
